PRIVACY POLICY

How we collect, use, and protect your personal information.

Effective date: 15 October 2026

1. Who we are

Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy ("Velokhaya", "we", "us") is a registered non-profit organisation based at 40 Makabeni Road, Village 1 North, Khayelitsha, Cape Town, 7784, South Africa. We are the responsible party for personal information processed through this website, as contemplated by the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

For any privacy-related questions or requests, contact us at sipho@velokhaya.com.

2. Information we collect

  • Information you send us. When you contact us by email, phone, or through the contact form on this site (which opens a message in your own email application), we receive the details you choose to share — typically your name, email address, and the content of your message.
  • Usage information (only with your consent). If you accept analytics cookies, we collect information about how you use this website — pages viewed, interactions with page elements, the website or campaign that referred you, approximate location derived from your IP address, device and browser type, and web performance measurements.

This website does not offer user accounts and does not ask you to submit payment details, identity numbers, or other special personal information.

3. How we use your information

  • To respond to your enquiries and correspond with you.
  • To understand how the website is used and improve it.
  • To administer partnerships, donations, and other support you offer us.

4. Cookies and analytics

When you first visit, we ask for your consent before loading any analytics. Essential storage (remembering your cookie choice) is always used; analytics run only if you choose "Accept All" or enable analytics under "Manage Preferences".

Our analytics are provided by Amplitude, configured to store and process data in the European Union. Amplitude sets cookies and collects the usage information described above. Because Amplitude processes this data in the EU, it is transferred outside South Africa, to a jurisdiction with data protection laws comparable to POPIA. You can withdraw or change your consent at any time via the Cookie Preferences link in the footer of every page; withdrawing stops analytics immediately and removes the analytics cookies from your browser.

5. Third-party services

  • Amplitude (EU). Analytics, as described above, only after consent.
  • External links. Links to social media platforms and map services take you to third-party sites governed by their own privacy policies.

6. Sharing of information

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with the service providers named above (to the extent they process it on our behalf), or where the law requires us to.

7. Retention

We keep correspondence for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and for our legitimate record-keeping. Analytics data is retained in line with Amplitude's retention settings and is not used to identify you personally.

8. Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and to object to processing. To exercise these rights, email sipho@velokhaya.com. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa.

9. Children

This website is aimed at supporters, partners, and families — not at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through this website. Information about our athletes is published only with appropriate consent.

10. Security

The website is served over HTTPS, and we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the personal information we hold.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top shows when it was last revised; significant changes will be flagged on this page.
